Mark 5

1Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Man Matthew 8:28-34; Luke 8:26-39

They arrived at the other side of the sea in the territory of the Gerasenes.
Other mss. read Gergesenes; still other mss. read Gadarenes
Matt 8:28; Luke 8:26
2Just as Jesus
Lit. he
stepped out of the boat, a man with an unclean spirit came out of the tombs and met him.
3He lived among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with a chain. 4He had often been restrained with shackles and chains but had snapped the chains apart and broken the shackles in pieces. No one could tame him. 5Night and day he kept screaming among the tombs and on the mountainsides and kept cutting himself with stones.

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell down in front of him, 7screaming in a loud voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I command you in the name of God not to torture me!”

8For Jesus
Lit. he
had been saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”
9Then Jesus
Lit. he
asked him, “What's your name?”

He said to him, “My name is Legion,
A Roman legion consisted of about 6,000 men.
because there are many of us.”
10He kept pleading with Jesus
Lit. him
not to send them out of the territory.

11Now a large herd of pigs was grazing on a hillside nearby. 12So the demons
Lit. they
begged him, “Send us among the pigs, so that we can go into them!”
13So he let them do this. The unclean spirits came out of the man
The Gk. lacks of the man
and went into the pigs, and the herd of about 2,000 rushed down the cliff into the sea and drowned there.
Lit. drowned in the sea

14Now when those who had been taking care of the pigs ran away, they reported what had happened
Lit. they reported it
in the city and countryside. So the people
Lit. they
went to see what had happened.
15When they came to Jesus and saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there dressed and in his right mind, they were frightened. 16The people who had seen it told them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and the pigs. 17So they began to beg Jesus
Lit. him
to leave their territory.Matt 8:34; Acts 16:39

18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed kept begging him to let him go with him.Luke 8:38 19But Jesus
Lit. he
wouldn't let him. Instead, he told him, “Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you.”
20So the man
Lit. he
left and began proclaiming in the Decapolis

how much Jesus had done for him. And everyone was utterly amazed.
21Jesus Heals Jairus’ Daughter and a Woman with Chronic Bleeding Matthew 9:18-26; Luke 8:40-56When Jesus again had crossed to the other side in a boat,

a large crowd gathered around him by the seashore.Matt 9:1; Luke 8:40
22Then a synagogue leader named Jairus arrived. When he saw Jesus,
Lit. him
he fell at his feetMatt 9:18; Luke 8:41
23and begged him urgently, saying, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may get well and live.” 24So Jesus
Lit. he
went with him. A huge crowd kept following him and jostling him.

25Now there was a woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years.Lev 15:25; Matt 9:20 26Although she had endured a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all of her money, she had not been helped at all but rather grew worse. 27Since she had heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his robe. 28For she had been saying, “If I can just touch his robe, I will get well.” 29Her bleeding stopped at once, and she felt in her body that she was healed from her illness.

30Immediately Jesus became aware that power had gone out of him. So he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”Luke 6:19; 8:46

31His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd jostling you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’ 32But he kept looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33So the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth.

34He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed from your illness.”Matt 9:22; Mark 10:52; Acts 14:9

35While he was still speaking, some people
Lit. they
came from the synagogue leader's home
Lit. from the synagogue leader
and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher anymore?”Luke 8:49

36But when Jesus heard

what they said, he told the synagogue leader, “Stop being afraid! Just keep on believing.”
37Jesus
Lit. He
allowed no one to go further with him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.

38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus
Lit. he
saw mass confusion. People
Lit. They
were crying and sobbing loudly.
39He entered the house

and said to them, “Why all this confusion and crying? The child isn't dead but is sleeping.”John 11:11
40They laughed and laughed at him. But he forced all of them outside. Then he took the child's father and mother, along with the men who were with him, and went into the room

where the child was.Acts 9:40

41He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,”
Talitha Koum is Heb./Aram. for Little girl, get up!
which means, “Little girl, I tell you, get up!”
42The little girl got up at once and started to walk, for she was twelve years old. Instantly they were overcome with astonishment. 43But Jesus
Lit. he
strictly ordered them not to let anyone know about this. He also told them to give her something to eat.Matt 8:4; 9:30; 12:16; 17:9; Mark 3:12; Luke 5:14
